It's time for golfers to hit the links and work out those winter kinks.
The Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club, in partnership with the Linganore High School Alumni Association, is hosting its annual Liberty Open Golf Classic at The Links at Challedon in Mount Airy on April 26.
This charity golf tournament benefits the scholarship funds of both sponsoring organizations.
Since its start in 1996, the Liberty Open has raised more than $35,000 awarded in scholarships to local high school graduates for higher education. Lion Sue Ensor said that while the alumni association's scholarship award goes to a Linganore High graduate, the Lions club scholarship can go to students from any local high school. "Anyone can apply. We have given it to students at South Carroll and [Francis Scott] Key High," Ensor said.
The entry fee for the Liberty Open is $85, which includes a round of 18 holes with a golf cart, a continental breakfast, a buffet lunch catered by Mountain Gate Restaurant in Thurmont, free beverages during play, a commemorative team photo, a courtesy raffle ticket, a goodie bag, and range and practice balls.
Ensor said several fun contests during play are included for the golfers. These include a $10,000 hole-in-one contest, $250 shootout, longest drive, closest to the pin, and awards for first-, second- and third-place teams. Other chances and items can be purchased, such as a 50/50 raffle chance, a double-or-nothing hole, and mulligans and powerballs. There will also be a silent auction with many items on which to bid.
Although the tournament is open to the public, if you are a Lions club member there are chances to compete for a special $300 prize. Any foursome with at least two Lions from their club and a third Lion can have any other fourth player and can compete for this "Tournament within a Tournament" prize.

Amelia Bedelia is turning 50. Many will remember the literal-minded maid who puts actual sponges in a sponge cake from our favorite childhood books.
