Ravens trade for center, adding competition for starting job

The Baltimore Ravens acquired center A.Q. Shipley through a trade with the Indianapolis Colts this morning, adding competition for the starting center job vacated by Matt Birk.

Shipley will compete with 2012 fourth-round pick Gino Gradkowski and rookie Ryan Jensen, a sixth-round pick this year.

In exchange for Shipley, the Colts receive a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL draft from the Ravens.

Shipley, 26, played in 14 games for Indianapolis last year and made five starts at center in place of injured starter Samson Satele.

Shipley played collegiately at Penn State and was a three-year starter at center for the Nittany Lions. He was a first-team All-Big 10 selection as both a junior and a senior. As a senior in 2008, he was selected as an All-American and also won the Rimington Trophy, given annually to the nation's top collegiate center.

Shipley was a seventh-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009 and spent time on the practice squads of both the Steelers (2009) and Philadelphia Eagles (2010) before signing with the Colts prior to last season.
