The Westminster High School Class of 2016 is having its first Chocolate Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the school lobby.

The $15 ticket price allows entrance to the event and free samples from each of 18 chocolatiers. They'll also be selling the products offered as samples.

"Guests will love sampling chocolate-covered strawberries, pretzels and even bacon," said Karen Kohr, event volunteer. "They will also enjoy chocolate peanut butter sandwiches, fudge and gourmet chocolate cupcakes."

Kohr said some of the best chocolates made in Maryland will be featured at the event, including some Carroll County favorites like The Treat Shop, Evie's Edibles, Gypsy's Tearoom and J. Cafe.

"We have the Velvet Chocolatier, who was voted Oprah's favorite chocolate in Baltimore, and Baltimore's famous Rheb's Homemade Candies," Kohr said.

Water and Starbucks coffee will also be sold at the event.

Tickets can be purchased by email at skkohr@verizon.net or at the door on the day of the event.

"This is a fundraiser for the Westminster High School graduating class of 2016," said Kohr. "We appreciate and are thankful to anyone who comes out and supports the class."

Westminster High School is at 1225 Washington Road, Westminster.

Harlem Wizards

The Harlem Wizards will play at McDaniel College, in Westminster, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the gymnasium.

The Wizards, who have been around since 1962, combine basketball tricks, fancy stunts and ball-handling magic with comedy and wild dunks to entertain crowds of all ages.

Proceeds from this event will help raise money to train Buddy, an assistant dog for 12-year-old West Middle School student Griffin Boag.

"He has a sensory processing disorder," said Griffin's mom, Wendy Boag. "The information that comes in through all his senses gets confused and he needs sensory breaks during the day. A service dog can provide sensory input by lying across the child's lap to calm him and through tactile input [when he strokes the dog]."

The family has purchased an Australian Labradoodle puppy, the recommended breed, but estimates to have the puppy trained range around $14,000. Insurance does not cover the expense.

Wendy Boag said many volunteers came together to create a home team to play the Wizards, including coaches from Westminster High School's basketball teams, West Middle 4School teachers, volunteers from McDaniel College, coaches from the Central Carroll Recreational Basketball team and football coaches from Stevenson University.

The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Buy tickets in advance for $10 or at the door for $12. Advance tickets can be purchased at http://www.harlemwizards.com or at Amie's Hair Pros, 3944 Sykesville Road, Finksburg.
