MACA Middle teams sweep MJAC championships
The Mount Airy Christian Academy middle school sports teams swept this year's fall Maryland Junior Athletic Conference Championships. The Lions girls' volleyball team went undefeated in MJAC play and won in the championship game over Maryland School for the Deaf. The Mount Airy boys soccer team was also undefeated in MJAC regular season play and blanked the Barnesville School to win their championship. To complete the sweep, the Lions boys and girls cross country squads completed their undefeated MJAC season by winning the championship meet held at the Friends Meeting School. The Lions four teams had a combined fall conference record of 21-0 in the MJAC.

Carroll athletes compete in state soccer competition
Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) hosted its soccer state-level competition with play devoted solely to the game of soccer, as soccer took center stage at the Crown Sports Center. Approximately 300 athletes and Unified Partners from 13 statewide programs competed in Traditional 7v7 soccer, Traditional 5v5 soccer, and an individual skills competition. Carroll athletes included Kelly Abel (Gold Medal - Skills competition); The 5v5 high school silver medal winning team included Katia Anderson, Seth Waters, Cody Waters, Jessica Zuback, Derrick Hamburg, and Bryan Berry; the 7v7 Adult Team gold medal team included Greg Anderson, Josh Ballard, Mark Brown, Tammy Holibaugh, Shelly Bowling, Erica Wheeler, Ralph Gemmill, and Josh Smith.


Carroll lifters excel in Central Maryland Classic
Sykesville's Dave Heck and Mt. Airy's Mike Muskey and Pat Rollins each brought home medals in the recent U.S.A.P.L. Central Maryland Push/Pull Challenge held at The Colosseum in Howard County. Heck won Gold by placing first in the SHW Division. He also recorded his third Maryland State Bench Press record during the competition. Muskey, competing in the 242 lb. class, also placed 1st and won gold in the Bench Pres. Rollins, who competed in the 198 lb. class, completed all lifts and brought home the Bronze medal in the same category. All three lifters compete in the U.S.A.P.L. Masters "Raw" Division.

Boxing returns to Ag Center with Pro-Am card featuring Tucker
Sykesville's Mark "TNT" Tucker headlines a boxing card on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Carroll County Agriculture Center's Shipley Arena. The event is scheduled to include at least 10 bouts, including top amateurs from Maryland and beyond and capped by Tucker's first bout in 2 1/2 years. Tucker, who fought several high-profile fights at Shipley Arena in winning his first 15 pro fights, hasn't fought since losing for the first time on March 12, 2011 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va.
