Writing to you during orange-carpet introductions, where Nick Markakis received loud cheers and Kevin Gregg received a few jeers.

Before the game, manager Buck Showalter chatted a bit about the importance of Opening Day.

"Why don't we have this crowd every day? It's a tradition for a lot of families. Every time we have a great crowd and a great atmosphere, I really want to play especially well so people that go home and say, I want to come back and be a part of that. So, of course it's important to me. If it doesn't happen I'll be disappointed. If it does, I'll dwell on it for about 10 minutes and see if we can do it again tomorrow.

"But I understand the reality of it. You look at last year and the years in the past, and you really know the reality of what it actually means long term. But it's one of those days when you live in the short term. I'm OK with that. I stand accused."

Showalter also did quite a bit of chatting on other topics -- Nick Markakis' return from surgery, Nolan Reimold in the leadoff spot, Brian Roberts' status and Jim Johnson in the closer role.

Check out the site and print edition tomorrow for more on all of that.
