Arlene Read Beard, 93, of Westminster, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Cozy Care Assisted Living in Union Bridge.
Born Feb. 13, 1920, in Union Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Charles Read; and foster daughter of the late Sam and Nan Myers, of Pleasant Valley. She was the wife of Sterling E. Beard, her husband of 71 years, who she married Nov. 30, 1942, in Madison, Wis., while he was in the Air Force.
She worked as a secretary for many years on Court Street for the late Judge Parke and the late Ralph Hoffman. She retired from the Maryland State Employment Agency in Westminster as a secretary/receptionist in 1985.
She was a lifelong member of Deer Park United Methodist Church in Smallwood, a member of the American Legion Carroll Post No. 31 since World War II and a member of the Carroll County Choral Society, where she loved singing in the alto section.
She enjoyed traveling to Florida and spending time with family and friends in their cabin at the Forest and Stream Club. She also enjoyed the beauty of nature, especially spring flowers. She was known for her willingness to listen and help others, her personality and her laugh.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are children and spouses Georgia Beard and Wayne Danner, of Cocoa, Fla., and Allen and Bobbi Beard, of Olney; grandson Justin Cox and wife Jennifer, of Gettysburg, Pa.; a great-grandson, Sterling J. Cox, of Gettysburg; two step-children; four step-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Karen Beard McDonald, of Manchester.
She was predeceased by a brother, Leo Read.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Pat Dols officiating. Interment will be private.
