Letter: Questionable history highlight

In the column Today in History on Saturday, July 20, the "highlight in history" is listed as being the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting incident which happened on that date in 2012. Mention is also made of the landing of man on the moon on the same date in 1969.

A hundred years from now, when we are able to travel routinely beyond the borders of our world to settlements and communities on other planets, mankind will still reflect back on this date in history as the anniversary of the first time that humans were able to set foot on another celestial body, the moon, and this date will be remembered as one of scientific discovery. The people who carried it out, both the astronauts on the moon and those on Earth who worked to make it happen, should be revered as true heroes and pioneers.

There is nothing historic about the tragedy in Aurora or heroic about the person who carried it out, and hopefully it will be little more than a footnote of events that happened on July 20. While tragic to be sure, is the Aurora shooting truly the "highlight in history" for the day?
