Young musicians to 'Jump Into Music'

Nearly 100 young musicians from Carroll, Frederick and Washington counties in Maryland and Jefferson County, W.Va., will take the stage when the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra performs "Jump Into Music" at 6 p.m. Sunday at Frederick Community College.
Performance pieces will come from a variety of eras, including modern, romantic, classical and baroque. The schedule includes "Egmont Overture" by Beethoven, Symphony No. 104 by Joseph Haydn, L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 by French composer Georges Bizet, "Duel of the Fates" by John Williams and "Blunderbuss Battles (Adventures on the High Seas)" by Ralph Ford.
Also, special guest trumpeter Nathan Clark will be featured in "Concerto in D for Trumpet" by Georg Philipp Telemann.
Clark is the principal trumpet for the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and the Apollo Chamber Orchestra. He is also a member of the United States Air Force Band's Ceremonial Brass and has been performing for foreign dignitaries with the band since 2001.
The students make up four performance groups. Chris Sanchez will direct the concert strings. Saron Zearfoss will direct an ensemble of woodwinds, brass and percussion. The Symphonia, an intermediate level orchestra, will be co-directed by Tom Mitchell and Nick Marini. The advanced level orchestra, the Philharmonic, will be under the direction of Stephen Czarkowski.
Colin David, of Woodbine, plays first cello. He said he has been playing for about six years and joined the orchestra about a year ago. He said the experience has been especially beneficial because his conductor, Czarkowski, plays cello as well.
"We get a lot of coaching from Mr. Czarkowski," David said. "He is very good."
David said he has entered concerto competitions in the past and is pleased to be able to practice for those competitions with the regional orchestra.
"It's great experience," said David.
David said he was looking forward to performing with guest trumpeter, Clark, in the trumpet concerto Sunday. He said it is the first brass concerto he has performed.
"It should be pretty interesting," he said.
The youth orchestra was started 35 years ago by members of the Frederick Symphony Orchestra in order to promote music among youth, said Orchestra Manager Peggy Alley.
She said the group is made of students from fifth through 12th grades and they perform four concerts each year.
Alley said the group holds regular auditions in August, but they are looking for more brass and woodwind players and will schedule a special audition by request any time of the year.
The nonprofit orchestra is funded in part by the Maryland State Arts Council, the Frederick Arts Council and community support. To learn more about the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra, visit http://www.fryo.org.
