'Dreams with Deadlines' designed to motivate women

Joni Reynolds is gearing up to host her fourth "Dreams with Deadlines," a seminar-style event she founded to motivate women to pursue their dreams.

"We as women get so caught up in helping other people achieve their dreams," she said.

The Owings Mills resident has been working in communication and public relations for more than 25 years.

She was the media director for Faith Christian Fellowship World Outreach on Winands Road in Owings Mills, and has been writing a political and pop culture blog since 2008.

Reynolds came up with the idea for the event by examining her own career and after being laid off from her job, took the opportunity to pursue the plan she had been designing for years.

Getting the idea for the event from an episode of Dr. Phil, Reynolds leads discussions about motivating women to pursue the ideas and projects that they love.

Reynolds quoted Dr. Phil McGraw as saying "a goal is a dream with a deadline."

"My passion is to speak to women," she said. "This is the thing closest to my heart right now."

Her blog, titled "Politics from the eyes of an Ebony Mom," covers topics that range from the presidential race, to literature to award shows and sports.

"I'm not claiming to be a political pundit," Reynolds said.

Her goal is to address topics that she believes the "national conversation is focused on," and to expand her own world view through dialogue with her readers.

"It's a different way of looking at things," she said.

BBC radio featured Reynolds comment on a blog post she wrote about Sarah Ferguson.

Reynolds' two children both attend Owings Mills High School. Her son is a senior and her daughter is a sophomore.

"Kids are encouraged to dream big," she said, adding that encouragement usually stops once people reach adulthood.

"We need people in our lives to say you can do it," she said. "You fail when you just give up."

At "Dreams with Deadlines," the participants arrive with a dream in mind.

"It's just igniting something in you," Reynolds said.

She said she'll talk about dream killers, creating a plan, and having an accountability partner.

"When you really want something, you are going to have to work at it," she said. "Someday is not a day in the week."

In the end, Reynolds says she asks the participants "are you committed to making this dream?"

"When we say we don't have time, we're actually saying it's not a priority," she said.

In the future, Reynolds hopes to host a "Dreams with Deadlines" seminar every other month and transition to once a month, if demand increases.
