The Shepherd's Staff has been awarded the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Carroll County.
The award is presented to individuals and/or organizations in each county and Baltimore City that show the same commitment to helping people that Schaefer -- former state governor and Maryland comptroller -- exuded, according to the comptroller's website.
Comptroller Peter Franchot's office accepted nominations, and recipients were chosen based on the ability to demonstrate an improvement in the community, response to problems using government intervention, aid to society's most vulnerable and more.
The comptroller gives the award to each winner. Franchot presented Shepherd's Staff -- a nonprofit Christian outreach and support center serving Carroll's needy -- with the award Wednesday.
