Local Auto Racing: Westminster's McClelland wins Trail-Way feature

DATE: April 18

RACE: 25-lap 358 Sprint Feature

WINNER: Brad McClelland, Westminster

RACE NOTES: Brad McClelland scratched from his qualifying event after blowing a motor in warm-ups. His team went home to grab a second car, and returned in time for McClelland to tag the rear of the 10-car field for the start of the feature. It took him just 11 laps to take the lead, sliding under Randy Whisler for the front spot in turn 4. Robert Kendall led the first nine laps before he drove to the infield with motor problems during a caution flag for Brent Rumberger, who spun into the infield after contact with Matt Campbell on the backstretch. Whisler resumed the lead for the restart and led one lap before yielding to McClelland. Once in front, McClelland drove away from the field to a 5.82-seond win over Whisler. Seth Kearchner was third, Campbell fourth and Zach Euculano completed the top five.

WINNER: Michelle Walls, Gettysburg, Pa.

RACE NOTES: At the age of just 15, lady racer Michelle Walls captured her first ever street stock feature win in the only appearance of the Street Stock division this season at Lincoln. Walls started fourth and took the lead on the 12th lap from Gary Potts and held on over the final eight laps for the victory. Potts finished second, Walt Lemmon third, Bob Scott fourth and Chris Heller completed the top five.

RACE: 25-lap 410 Super Sprint Feature

WINNER: Alan Krimes, Denver, Pa.

CARROLL FINISHER: 14th Steve Owings, Westminster

RACE NOTES: Alan Krimes started 13th in the feature that saw several red flags and in one lap that saw nine of the top 10 running cars dropping from contention. But Krimes missed all of the crashes and won the battle of attrition to score his second straight victory and upped his career total to 15 at Lincoln. All the craziness started on lap five when Steve Owings spun, collecting Nathan Berwager, and Brian Montieth who flipped. Aaron Ott also flipped in turn three. On the restart, Tim Wagaman and Adam Wilt tangled collecting point leader Danny Dietrich, who did everything but flip on the front stretch. Second-place runner Billy Dietrich then stopped on the next restart which made him the ninth car inside the top 10 to drop out. Krimes, Jim Siegel, Brent Marks and Robbie Kendall all entered the top five with Krimes storming by Rose to take the lead with six laps complete. Krimes continued to lead Siegel as the pair closed on lapped traffic when Tyler Ross and Wilt tangled in turn three. Krimes held off Siegel in heavy lapped traffic over the final few laps to pick up the win worth $4,000. Siegel finished second, Robbie Kendall third, Montieth fourth and Gerald McIntyre fifth.

RACE: 30-lap Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial 410 Super Sprint Feature

WINNER: Doug Esh, Lancaster, Pa.

RACE NOTES: Doug Esh started second in the feature that saw only one caution period, on just the second lap. Esh outgunned polesitter Pat Cannon to lead the first lap before the yellow appeared. During the first 10 laps, 10th-place starter Dave Blaney surged forward, taking over fourth on the fourth lap before moving into third with 12 laps down. Esh entered the rear of the field with 11 laps away and found fifth place-starter Brian Montieth chasing him after finally getting by Cannon for the spot a lap earlier. Esh escaped disaster on the 16th lap and again on the 18th lap after contact with lapped cars, Chad Layton first and then Brent Marks. Just as Montieth went for the kill and massive slider to briefly take control, his car puffed a cloud of blue smoke and with that his chances were over for the victory. Montieth pulled into the pits as Esh streaked to victory, his first in the prestigious event and his first at the track since August, 2011. His margin of victory was some six seconds. Cannon finished second, Stevie Smith third, Greg Hodnett fourth and Dave Blaney fifth. Esh's payday was $7,500.

Greg Hodnett, who started eighth in the field, would eventually end up second, taking over the spot from Justin Barger with five laps to go. By the time Hodnett secured the spot, Blaney was in the middle of the backstretch as he crossed the start-finish line on the front stretch. Blaney picked up the victory over Hodnett by 6.392 seconds.
