Library Schedules (June 5-11)

Westminster library branch

The Westminster branch of the Carroll County Public Library, 50 E. Main St., Westminster, will offer the following programs this week. Registration is required only where noted. For more information, call 410-386-4488.

Tuesday

Amazing Space: 5:30 p.m. All ages. The transit of Venus is among the rarest astronomical phenomena and won't happen again until the year 2117. Join the Westminster Astronomical Society, Inc. for games, activities, and the viewing of Venus. So prepare now and don't miss out on this extremely special event. Children 3 and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Evening Story Time: 7 p.m. All ages. This story time introduces stories through books, songs, and activities. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Read and Play: 11 a.m. Ages birth-24 months. A story time featuring lap games, tickles, bounces, and rhymes followed by a playgroup for meeting and mingling. Siblings welcome. With an accompanying caregiver.

Story Pals: 10 a.m. Ages 2-3. A theme-based story time featuring interactive and age-appropriate stories, songs, finger plays and activities. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Lend a Helping Hand: 6:30 p.m. Adults. Being a teen is hard enough. Imagine doing it without a family. Please join the Carroll County Department of Social Services to learn how you can make the difference in the lives of teens by keeping them in their own community. CCDSS is seeking families who are willing to take teenagers, sibling groups, and medically fragile newborns into their homes. Learn how, as a community, we can all help care for our youth. New Kid on the Block: 7 p.m. Adults. Looking for something different for your garden this year? Want to be the envy of your neighbors? Richard Hubble, landscape designer and owner of Silver Run Nursery, will introduce some new and seldom used plants that will enhance your garden and make your neighbors salivate.

Songs at 6:30 Concert Series: 6:30 p.m. All ages. Join us for this free evening concert series featuring local and regional musicians. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy some terrific music. Sponsored by The City of Westminster, Downtown Westminster Main Street Program, and Coffey Music. Rain location: lower level of Longwell Parking Garage. Children 3 and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Bringing the Civil War to Life for Kids: Joshua Chamberlain: 2 p.m. Ages 6-17. Join local historian Michael Eckard as he talks about Joshua Chamberlain, the Hero of Gettysburg. The program will include selected readings, lots of interactive Q & A, and a discussion of Chamberlain's experiences in the Civil War, including how he went from college professor to soldier. Mr. Eckard will bring along artifacts from his personal collection, with hands-on time at the end of the program. A Celebrating America program.

Awesome Anime: 2 p.m. Ages 11-17. Bring the East a little closer to the West. Grab your favorite manga or graphic novel and join the fandom fun. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday

PAWS to Read: 2 p.m. Ages 6-17. Come to the library and read a story to a book-loving dog. Research shows that children enjoy improving their reading skills by practice reading to animals. Registration for this program began 5/26/2012.

Monday

Morning Matinee: 10:30 a.m. Ages 3-Adults. Ready, Set, Action. The Finksburg Branch will be showing some family favorite films this summer. Stop by, watch the movie, have some popcorn, and then check out a few books about your favorite characters. Children 3 and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Refreshments will be served.

Sidewalk Chalk Spectacular: 10 a.m. All ages. Add your own creative touch to the Finksburg Branch. Join us Mondays this summer to give our walkways some flair and fun. Program is weather permitting. Guidelines and chalk available at the Information Desk. Children 3 and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.
