Veterans event planned for next month

Have you been wondering where the annual fall fundraising gala for the Sykesville Gate House Museum of History went? It just moved to next month.

In a show of community solidarity, the museum waited to hold its big event until the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Hall was ready for business. Now that the hall is open, here comes the party.

The Sykesville Gate House Museum of History presents "A Salute to Veterans" for its 10th annual fundraising gala. From 6 to 11 p.m. March 16, you can come out and salute our military men and women. You'll also be helping to support your hometown museum.

Dr. Mark Fraser, museum curator, said, "We're trying to keep it in the community. We're using a community band, as well. The volunteers are either from the museum or the Carroll County Young Marines."

The program honoring the veterans will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner from 7 to 8 p.m.

Food will be from Kevin's Katering of Sykesville. The buffet dinner will feature three meats, cheeses, salads and a dessert table. The beverages will include soft drinks, iced tea and coffee.

The JoeyDCares Rock Orchestra, a local concert band that provides live music to charitable causes, will provide rock, pop, jazz and swing music from 8 to 10 p.m.

The gala will also include a color guard, World War II re-enactors and a silent auction.

The dress code is semiformal attire: a suit and tie for men and a cocktail dress or pants ensemble for women.

Tickets are $45 per person, which works out to $90 per couple or $360 for a table of eight.

You can get tickets at the Sykesville Gate House Museum of History, 7283 Cooper Drive, Sykesville, from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. In addition, you can buy tickets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Sykesville Town House, 7547 Main St., Sykesville.
