College Roundup: Navy draws early ranking as No. 43 football team in nation

magazine. Ohio State (third) and Notre Dame (17th) are the only 2014 Navy opponents ranked in front of the Midshipmen.

Steele ranks four Navy units among the best in the country. He ranks Navy's quarterbacks as the 20th best quarterbacks in the country (Ohio State was #5), Navy's running backs (SB's and FB's) were ranked 39th in the country (Army's backs are ranked 9th, Ohio State 22nd and Notre Dame 24th), the offensive line is ranked as the 33rd best offensive line (Notre Dame is 16th) and Navy's special teams are ranked 24th in the country (Ohio State is 15th).

Navy opens up the 2014 campaign on Aug. 30 against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon and the game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network.

NAVY WOMEN'S TENNIS:

Six members of the Navy women's tennis team are among the 57 student-athletes that have been named to the Patriot League Women's Tennis Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced on Wednesday.

To be eligible for the women's tennis academic honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester.

Sophomore Mikaela Carlson earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the fourth straight semester and she has an overall cumulative GPA of 4.0 as an international relations major.

Senior Erin Snook was named to the academic honor roll for the first time in her career. Snook had a 3.60 GPA in her final semester at Navy.

Senior Darien Sears was named to the Patriot League Women's Tennis Academic Honor Roll for the third time in her career. Sears earned a 3.40 GPA in her final semester at Navy.

Junior Gabby Winter earned her first selection to the honor roll after achieving a 3.83 GPA as a quantitative economics major.

Sophomore Maggie McLaughlin and freshman Audrey Channell were also named to the league's academic honor roll. McLaughlin posted a 3.50 GPA as a chemistry major and Channell had a 3.35 GPA as an oceanography major.

NAVY MEN'S BASKETBALL:

Four members of the Navy men's basketball team are among the 35 student-athletes named to the Patriot League Men's Basketball Academic Honor Roll, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Recent graduates James Loupos and Thurgood Wynn were named to the honor roll for the first times in their careers. Rising senior Kevin Alter was named to the honor roll for a second time and freshman Grant Vermeer was also recognized.

Loupos earned a 3.47 GPA in the spring semester as an international relations major.  Wynn posted a 3.27 GPA last semester as an economics major. Vermeer earned a 3.35 GPA during the spring semester and he is majoring in Navy's newest major, cyber operations.
