Westminster Superfresh to be replaced with grocery, pet stores

Vacant retail space that used to house Westminster's Superfresh will be replaced with two stores - another grocer and a pet store chain.

"We have executed leases with discount grocer ALDI and with Petco," said Mark Bomse, vice president with Greenberg Gibbons Commercial of Owings Mills. "We anticipate they will both open before the end of this summer and are working hard to help make that happen."

The empty space was on the market since July after Superfresh's parent company, New Jersey-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc., held a bidding process to market and sell 25 Superfresh locations, including locations in Westminster and Mount Airy.

A bid made by the Westminster Superfresh's landlord, Englar Center LP, was approved at a bankruptcy court hearing. Englar Center LP is an entity controlled by Greenberg Gibbons Commercial.

There were as many as 58 employees each at the Mount Airy and Westminster Superfresh locations, according to Michael Raia, a spokesman for the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The Superfresh in Mount Airy wasn't sold in the bidding process. It also closed in July.
