College Roundup: Navy athletes earn postseason honors

NAVY WOMEN'S TENNIS:

Three members of the Navy women's tennis team were named to the 2014 All-Patriot League Team, the conference office announced Tuesday. Senior Erin Snook was named to the all-league first team while senior team captain Darien Sears and sophomore Sam Droop were voted to the second team.

Snook was Navy's starter at No. 1 singles and was also a primary starter at No. 2 doubles. Snook was 19-9 in overall singles and 15-5 in dual play. Snook was a perfect 6-0 in singles during the Patriot League Regular Season. She was also 16-16 overall in doubles.

Sears was Navy's starter at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles. She was 18-12 in singles and 10-8 in dual play. Snook was also 13-10 overall in doubles and 10-6 in dual play.

Droop led Navy in wins in 2013-14 with an overall record of 22-11.

Meanwhile, sophomore Mikaela Carlson was named to the 2014 Patriot League Women's Tennis All-Academic Team, the conference office announced.

Carlson becomes the first Navy women's tennis player to earn academic all-league honors.

The Carmel, Ind., native posted a 15-12 record in doubles this season and 11-9 in dual play. Carlson was 4-2 in doubles during the Patriot League Regular Season. Carlson was a starter at No. 1 doubles along with junior Noelle Kaufmann.

NAVY BASEBALL:

The Mids saw five of their players recognized on All-Patriot League teams as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Senior captain Kash Manzelli was selected as the Patriot League Player of the Year, while junior lefty Anthony Parenti was named Pitcher of the Year for the league.

In addition to Manzelli and Parenti, the left side of Navy's infield was represented on the All-Patriot League First Team, as Travis Blue and Drew Hayes gave the Mids four players on the squad. Sophomore outfielder Robert Currie rounded out the All-League honors as he was named to the second team.

Navy's first Patriot League Player of the Year since Toph Lake in 1998 and just fifth all-time, Manzelli batted .302 for the season and led the Patriot League with 37 RBIs while standing in the top five in the league in doubles (11) and home runs (3).

Led by an ERA that was 1.10 runs lower than his nearest league competitor, Parenti garnered the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year award.

NAVY MEN'S TENNIS:

Navy's Calvin Mark, Austin Jones and Blake Daniel garnered all-league honors from the Patriot League on Tuesday. Both Mark and Jones earned first-team honors and Daniel received

Mark posted a 20-7 record in singles to go along with an 18-4 record in doubles during the 2014 spring season.

Jones held down the No. 2 slot in Navy's singles lineup toward the end of the season and, like Mark, compiled a 5-2 record over the final eight matches of the spring.

Daniel could be found at either Nos. 3 or 4 singles for most of the spring campaign and compiled a 10-3 record over the last 13 matches.

UMBC WOMEN'S LACROSSE:

Junior defender Lexi Bristow (Broadneck) was the recipient of the Retriever Club Scholarship Award for her senior campaign.

This season, she was one of only three Retrievers to start and appear in all 16 games. She ranked second on the squad in caused turnovers and posted career-bests in ground balls and draw controls. She received a spot on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2012.

UMBC BASEBALL:

Freshman designated hitter Hunter Dolshun and sophomore third baseman Mark Esposito each had four hits to lead an 18-hit offense by the Retrievers (14-24) in a 13-8 victory over Towson.

TOWSON SOFTBALL:

Sophomore outfielder Olivia Yarbrough, junior pitcher/outfielder Missy McCormick and freshman catcher Holiday Cahill all earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors, the league announced on Tuesday night.

In addition, outfielder Kate Helmick (North County) was named to the all-academic team. A sophomore nursing major, Helmick has appeared in 15 games and scored four runs.
