About 20 people gathered at Sportsman's Hall skate rink in Upperco to be part of what was thought to be the world's largest simultaneous flash mob.
ViSalus Sciences, a weight loss company supporting the flash mob, also supported hundreds of flash mobs around the United States and Canada, including ones in Baltimore, and Camp Hill, Lancaster and State College in Pennsylvania, according to its website.
"The flash mobs are just a fun way for us to celebrate our one-millionth customer, along with getting people off of their couches," said Bobbie Wasserman, a spokesperson for ViSalus.
The flash mob dance was inspired by Alfonso Ribeiro, known as Carlton from the 1990s television show, "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." Some of the dance moves included "The Carlton" and "The Challenge," which is usually accompanied by the song "Jump on It," by the Sugar Hill Gang. A DJ was present for the dancing.
Other celebrities have joined the weight-loss program, such as Hulk Hogan, said Marcie Davis, a local distributor of the company's products.
"We created this flash mob, just because we could," said Caitlin Brooks, director of the Westminster flash mob. "We really wanted to promote a healthy lifestyle to the community through the company presenting this."
Caitlin and her husband, Herb Brooks, said they became involved with ViSalus Sciences when they heard about their effective weight loss products. After following the program for several months, they became distributors of the product.
"It's been a really great experience being a part of the company," she said.
More than 160,000 people joined the weight loss program in March 2012 alone, Davis said.
The flash mob was originally set to take place Saturday at Bounce With Me Inflatables, according to http://www.worldslargestflashmob.com. However, the festival was cancelled due to the rain.
The millions of people participating were hoping to set a Guinness World Record. A search for flash mob records on the Guinness webpage, however, yielded no results.
