Carroll Lutheran Village resident Jim Harkness was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame on Oct. 17. He was one of 36 older adults in Maryland inducted at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie. Harkness was nominated for his ongoing volunteerism, most notably in the area of volunteer management. As a member of the Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Committee, Harkness has been using his volunteer management skills to develop a proposed volunteer program that would create a sense of community and support around the skilled nursing Health Care Center. He also gives time to the marketing department to meet with prospective residents to provide perspective on the decision making process to retire, downsize and move to a retirement community Prior to moving to the Village, he volunteered at the Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) through the Howard County Office on Aging at the beginning stages of the Medicare overhaul. He worked to help consumers better understand Medicare Part D and to help SHIP refine the way it serves older adults. He has also been involved in volunteer leadership roles with the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Harpers Choice Swim Team in Columbia.
