18-year-old pedestrian struck by car

An 18-year-old Mount Airy man is in serious condition after a vehicle struck him while he was crossing a Mount Airy intersection that allegedly had a "Do Not Walk Sign," according to a Maryland State Police news release.

Darryl Emile Schumaker, 46, of Mount Airy, was traveling south on Md. 27 Saturday in a Honda Ridgeline when Shane Franklin, 18, reportedly attempted to cross Md. 27 from Twin Arch Road, the release stated.

Witness statements said there was a "Do Not Walk Sign" as Franklin crossed the street, according to the release. He was struck in the southbound lane and was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

As of the news release received at 9 p.m., he is in serious condition.

A little before 12:40 p.m., the Mount Airy Fire Department responded to the intersection for a report of the collision. Maryland State Police officers and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and the State Highway Administration followed suit, the release stated.

The Maryland State Police is investigating the incident.
