Vetri becomes Eagle Scout

Anthony "Tony" Vetri, of New Windsor, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Vetri's Eagle Scout Court of Honor took place Aug. 4 at St. Luke's "Winter's" Lutheran Church in New Windsor. Boy Scout Troop 582, of which he is a longtime member, meets there.

His Eagle Scout project was to replace the garden at the Maryland State Police Barrack in Westminster. The project involved trimming trees, removing years of overgrowth, planting new bushes and mulching. Flowers were also planted to reflect the colors of the state flag.

Vetri said he chose the project to honor Tfc. Mickey Lippy, a state police flight paramedic who died in a medevac helicopter crash in Prince George's County in 2008. Lippy was a Westminster resident and member of the Gamber fire company.

Vetri then decided that he wanted to honor all troopers - past, present and future. He placed a memorial stone at the entrance to the parking lot. The stone reads: "Maryland State Troopers ... Thank You ... Citizens of Carroll County."

Lippy's parents attended Vetri's Eagle Court of Honor, as did representatives of the Maryland State Police and other officials and dignataries.

Vetri's Scouting experience began in 2005, when he joined the Cub Scouts. He became a Boy Scout in 2006.

He has held various positions of leadership with Troop 582: senior patrol leader, troop guide, quartermaster, patrol leader, scribe and assistant patrol leader.

In 2009, he and other members from Troop 582 went to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, N.M., where they hiked 80 miles during a 14-day trip.

In 2010, he and other members from Troop 582 attended the Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys. Vetri canoed five miles to and from the island on which the troop was staying.

Vetri also attended Camp Mountaineer in West Virginia, Camp Broad Creek in Maryland, and Camp Sinoquipe in Pennsylvania.

In addition, Vetri has earned 21 merit badges during his Scouting career.

He wants to become an assistant scoutmaster.

Vetri is an honor roll student at Winters Mill High School, where he plays football. At the Carroll County Career and Technology Center, he has been part of the Emergency Services Technology class.

He is a corporal with JROTC program and has been in drill team competitions at various locations throughout Maryland.

In addition, he is a volunteer firefighter with the New Windsor fire company.

Vetri's goal is attend a four-year college, and ultimately join the Maryland State Police and become a flight paramedic. His career goal thus mirrors his Eagle project.
