One of the organizers, Tom Taylor, described the event. "We've got this private area, under tent, rain or shine. Everybody gets a wristband for two hours of all you can eat at the picnic buffet. Kids will have free access all evening to the fun zone."

The ballpark menu includes jumbo all-beef hot dogs, grilled hamburgers, potato salad, potato chips, iced tea, lemonade and soft drinks. The buffet will be available from 6 to 8 p.m.

With their wristbands, kids and parents will have free admission to the fun zone, which features a carousel, moon bounce, speed pitch, carnival games and more.

Taylor said, "We're right on the third-base side. If you want to stay in the private area you can, or you can move to another seat."

A portion of the proceeds from picnic tickets will go to support the South Carroll Business Association's scholarship programs. Taylor said they recently allocated $3,500 for scholarships at three local high schools: Century, Liberty and South Carroll.

Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $20 for youths from 3 to 12 years old. Admission for children younger than 3 is free, but they must have a ticket.

Jr. CSI Academy

Is your child fascinated by police procedural television shows? Do they just devour episodes of "CSI" and "NCIS"?

If your budding forensic analysts will be finishing fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth grade this June, they will be eligible for the Sykesville Police Department's fifth annual Junior Crime Scene Investigation Academy. This free program runs from May 30 to June 20, meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

Students will learn crime scene investigation techniques from professional law enforcement officers.

The first three classes will be held at the Sykesville Police Department. The final class and graduation will be held June 20 at Sykesville Middle School.

At the middle school, students will take their final exam. Teams of 10 students will investigate and process one of three different "homicide" scenes set up for them at the school.

The academy is limited to a total of 30 students, so it's important to sign up soon. To register or to get more information, call the Sykesville Police Department at 410-795-0757 or email policeadmin@sykesville.net.
