Men and women in Carroll donned high heels April 13 for the fifth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the international men's march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. The event raised more than $17,000 for Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County through a fundraising website. In addition to raising funds for the nonprofit, the goal of the walk is to educate the community about a very serious subject and to rally the community to take action to prevent sexual violence.

Access Carroll officially opened its new facility on Distillery Drive, and the nonprofit is hoping to integrate different kinds of care by housing primary care, mental health and even dental services in its new building. Access Carroll offers free and low-cost health services to low-income residents of Carroll County. The integrated health-care plan is expected to create a bridge between people who use the emergency room when they should be using a primary care doctor, officials said.

The Liberty High School Jazz Ensemble won first place in its division and the overall Grand Champion award at the New Orleans Choice Music Awards Cajun Showcase last week. Junior Emily Livesay, tenor saxophone, won the overall outstanding musician award for her solo in "125th Street Blues."

Arts council staff are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Carroll County Arts Council this year with a series of events, including the exhibit "10 x 10," which debuted in an opening reception Thursday. More than 200 artists have contributed art measuring 10 inches by 10 inches. The exhibit will be on view through June 7.

The three Super Sonic Sparks teams called 24A, 24C and 24Z, comprised of five members each, are competing at the VEX Robotics World Championship in Anaheim, Calif., through today. The three teams from the 35-member Carroll County 4-H robotics club have qualified for the worldwide event for five straight years. They are among the more than 15,000 participants on 700 teams from 24 countries around the world at the world championships.

Jane Sewell raised nearly $75,000 for the Alzheimer's Association, dancing in the Baltimore Memory Ball Gala. She raised the most money of participating dancers. The event raised $326,000.

Along with dancing partner Matthew Misroch,

Sewell performed a dance from "Dirty Dancing." Sewell is the executive director of the Union Mills Homestead Foundation in Westminster

and recently retired from teaching physical education and dance at Calvert School

. She danced in the memory of her cousin, Sargent Shriver. Shriver, the first director of the Peace Corps, died two years ago at the age of 95. He had Alzheimer's for eight years.
