We are enrolling now for our winter Home School PE Fencing academy for students 9-18. The first class is January 8. We will teach your homeschooler the basics of the sport of Olympic Fencing, including the 3 different weapons, the forms and maneuvers, and some of the history and development of the modern sport. The students will quickly learn to don their protective equipment and to handle a sword safely. They will learn to attack and parry (block) and how to score points. Some of the history of the sport will be presented through videos and/or movies. Fencing is a very physical sport, however, strength and natural athletic ability are not prerequisites. Some of the most effective fencers are doctors, lawyers, engineers and accountants. Fencing helps train our students to focus, work out problems, adapt to changing conditions, and to persevere. Our training also includes facets that many sports overlook; responsibility, determination, honor, courage, duty. Fencing is mainly an individual sport but it is also very much a team sport. While individual growth is important it is equally important that each team member help their teammates to achieve success. Any students that are interested are invited to participated in our other Team events and practices. This opportunity gives them additional contact with all of our club membership; from our Thursday night beginners to our Boys and Girls teams and our veterans. Our Salle (training facility) provides all of the safety equipment and weapons. Our instructors are members of the US Fencing Coaches Association and constantly upgrade their teaching skills. Our club is one of the few Guild Academies in the country; were a student is taught not just how to fence, but how to judge a match (bout), how to repair a weapon, how to conduct an event and how to teach others to fence. During the course of the class your student will have both physical and written tests to chart their performance. The ultimate goal is for them to be ready to participate in our Under 20 Tournament in April if they desire. A class tournament will be held on the final day of classes. The academy runs 12 weeks on Tu and Th from 12:30pm to 2pm and is $240 for the 24 class program. Each student will need to come dressed in gym shorts, tee shirt and sturdy tennis shoes and socks. We do have locker rooms and lavatories. Parents and siblings are welcome to come and watch from our Family Room which has wi-fi, tv and age appropriate movies.
