The residents of Reisterstown who have lived here for a few years can remember being upset when Friendly's on Main Street closed. It sat empty for a while and then Martha and Mary's Restaurant moved in.
Martha and Mary's is one of those small-town kind of places, even as Reisterstown grows daily around it. You know when you walk in you are in a family owned and run business. The food is always good, the service is always friendly and once you've been going there enough, you will no longer need to look at the large TVs hanging over the counter to see what menu item you want.
Every town has that one place where the local teenagers think it's "cool" to work at and Martha and Mary's is that locale. You will see a lot of the Franklin High school folks working there.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and they sure do it right. Martha and Mary's offers the typical morning selections such as pancakes, egg sandwiches, French toast and omelets, but my-oh-my the best breakfast treat ever is their breakfast pizza. It truly has to be tasted to be believed.
Honestly, until a few months ago I had not tried one. The weekend my boyfriend and I were moving into a house not far from the restaurant, we decided to stop in for breakfast. Wanting to try something new, we chose the breakfast pizza off the menu. Making an assumption based on the modest price that the pizza was a "personal" size, we both ordered one, which proved to be a big mistake on our part. The modest price will fool you. It's a full-size large pizza covered with a light butter sauce, cheese, scrambled eggs and in our case breakfast sausage, ham and bacon. We had to have one boxed, which actually worked out because we got to enjoy an excellent breakfast the next morning while we unpacked our new home.
During the lunch hour here in Reisterstown, Martha and Mary's is typically - and understandably - busy. They have a number of sandwiches and wraps, which are very reasonably priced, that come with a side and drink for one low price tag. My personal favorite is the "Matthew's Meatball Sub." This eight-inch sub has homemade meatballs, a great sauce and a generous helping of mozzarella cheese. I typically get mine with their homemade kettle chips and a 20-ounce beverage. Their "John's Jumbo Burger" is also very good, as is their "Fried Shrimp or Clam Po'Boy Sub."
Dinner time favorites include chicken over biscuits, cream of crab soup, homemade pizzas, and strombolis that are large and yummy and can be filled with your choice of ingredients. They make their own sweet potato fries too, which are far too good.
Martha and Mary's is a family establishment. They have a chalk board for the kids to write and draw on, and occasionally you'll find a creative grown up back there drawing too. They offer high chairs and kid-friendly menu items such as grilled cheese sandwiches and cheeseburgers.
What meal is complete without dessert? Martha and Mary's offers a number of wonderful desserts, from their large brownies and rice crispy treats to homemade sundaes.
Martha and Mary's is located at 75 Main Street.
