Scout's trip to New Mexico being fueled by spaghetti

Local Boy Scout Benjamin McCardell is offering a free spaghetti dinner at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, in Eldersburg, Feb. 11 to bring attention to his goal of going to New Mexico to backpack around Philmont Scout Ranch for 10 days with fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 270.

The meal, which will be from 4 to 7 p.m., will include spaghetti, salad, breadsticks, desserts and beverages.

Donations will be accepted to help offset the $2,000 needed to make the three-week trip, which will also include stops at a variety of historical sites as the travelers drive from here to New Mexico and back.

Benjamin's dad, Shawn McCardell, said the freshman at South Carroll High School has been planning the trip for more than a year and has participated in a variety of troop fundraisers, but this is his first personal fundraiser.

"It's a lot about leadership skills ... and it's been a long process for him," the elder McCardell said of his son, who came up with the idea for the spaghetti dinner. "He had to present his plan to the church and to the church elders to get it approved. I'm really proud of him."
