Ripken's son highlight of draft's final day for Birds

The Orioles wrapped up their 2012 First-Year Player Draft with 25 picks, and the highlight to many Baltimore baseball fans might have been the team's fifth pick Wednesday - Gilman School senior Ryan Ripken, son of former Orioles great Cal Ripken Jr.

The Orioles took the younger Ripken in the 20th round with the 655th overall pick. He's a left-handed first baseman who stands 6 feet, 6 inches and weighs 205 pounds. The 18-year-old batted .377 with 25 RBIs for Gilman this spring, and when he pitched for the Greyhounds Ripken was 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA.

Back in November, Ripken committed to attend the University of South Carolina in the fall. The Gamecocks have won back-to-back College World Series titles and are in the mix for this year's national championship as well.
