Golfers raise funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma

The 15th annual Ruth's Chris Steak House Sizzling Celebrity Golf Classic was a mega success with 45 golfers fun(d) raising $225,000 to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Maryland Chapter, an organization fighting dreaded blood cancers.

The venue was picturesque Woodholme Country Club. Despite horrific rain the day prior, it was a gorgeous sunny day for "Golf Day 2012."

Following a fun day on the lush green turf of Woodholme Country Club, golfers and sponsors enjoyed plentiful cocktails, lavish hors d'oeuvre and a wonderful selection of foods of food items for dinner.

Jon Levinson was auctioneer for interesting auction items. This was followed by an awards presentation and a Sizzling Car Raffle in the beautifully decorated Crystal Room in Ruth's Chris Pikesville location. A fab 2013 Lexus GS 350 was won by a lucky golfer.

Personable Steve DeCarlos and Scott Garceau emceed the program agenda. The magnificent table centerpieces were created by Leslie Amick, Ruth's Chris banquet coordinator. The centerpieces were gorgeous with golf balls included in this unique floral arrangement!

The first place winning golf team was Mariner Distribution. Congrats!

Committee members included honorary chair Steve de Castro, owner of Ruth's Chris Steak House and Beth Prensky with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Ruth's Chris staffers on the tournament committee included: Leslie Amick, Pikesville Catering Manager; Mary Callan, Pier 5 Catering Manager; Ben El-Dahabi, Pikesville General Manager; Jacki Donnelly, marketing; David Doward, Water Street General Manager; Barb Esslinger, Accounting; Pedro Gonzalez, Pier 5 General Manager; Tom Isabella, Annapolis General Manager; Sallyann Koontz, Water Street/Havana Catering Manager; Andy Lutz, Havana Club General Manager; Jim Mitich, Director of Operations; Heather Renz, Marketing Director, Edwin Rutz, Regional Kitchen Manager and Richard Sammis.

Mega thanks Steve de Castro, committee, all the golfers, sponsors, donors, auction contributors and volunteers from both Ruth's Chris and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well as their staffers for their involvement with the fab success of this year's event!

LLS data

Leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are diseases that can affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system..

A diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma brings many challenges. LLS is committed to providing support and guidance to patients, caregivers and health care professionals.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society does provide support services to blood cancer patients and their families.

Patient financial aid provides a limited amount of financial assistance to help patients with financial need who are under a doctor's care for confirmed blood cancer diagnosis.

Family Support Groups: The Society's groups are led by oncology nurses and social workers. They are open to patients, survivors and family members.

Patti Robinson Kaufmann First Connection Program: This peer program can connect a newly diagnosed patient with a person who has met the challenges of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, myeloma or myelodysplastic syndrome. The peer volunteer helps by listening to concerns, validating feelings and answering questions person-to-person.

The Trish Greene Back to School Program for the Child with Cancer: This program provides books, brochures and videos to assist with a successful transition back to school for the child with cancer. LLS also offers an educational program called: Staying Connected: Facilitating the Learning Experience During and After Cancer Treatment.

For more info about these programs, please contact the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society "Patient Services." Our local LLS Society, Maryland Chapter, is located at 100 Painters Mill Road #800, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117. Kate Bernard is with Patient Services at our local office. Their phone number is 443-471-1600 or on the web: http://www.LLS.org.

LLS has chapter offices throughout the US and Canada. Each office provides life-enhancing patient services, programs, support and financial aid. LLS also hosts numerous telephone and web education programs, featuring the latest research, treatment and clinical trials findings from medical experts.

Since the first funding in 1954, LLS has invested more than $814 million in leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes research. LLS funded research has led to key advances in understanding blood cancers and has helped produce new treatments to enhance and prolong lives!

Recent studies show that more than 99% of newly diagnosed early stage chronic myeloid leukemia patients can expect to survive long-term. Hodgkin Lymphoma patient survival rates have more than doubled to 86% since the 1960's. The survival rate for myeloma patients more than tripled in the past decade!

In LLS last reported year, 78.1% of monies raised by LLS went to research, patient and community services, advocacy and education!

Someday LLS will have a strong role to cure cancer! For over 60 years, they have been fighting for that day. Their mission is a world without blood cancer!

This is a fantabulous organization for those unfortunately inflicted with blood cancers to connect with!
