Honoring King's legacy

Many of us will have off Jan. 21 to celebrate and remember the life and work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In order to truly honor him, try to use the holiday to help others, and instead of just a day off from work, view it as a day of service.

There are many options for helping every day, but on this day in particular the Second Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service will be held at St. John Catholic Community in Eldersburg. From 9 a.m.-2 p.m. residents can come volunteer for different projects like building bluebird houses, making blankets for Project Linus, putting together toiletry kits and making bag lunches for soup kitchen's among many other activities. This is a great opportunity to use the day to actually honor the legacy of King and teach your children the value of giving. For more information, you can head to The Advocate Calendar on Page 4.

Whether you take part in an organized event like the one in Eldersburg or focus on something else, giving some of yourself to others is what King would want from us all.
