Men's basketball: Mount hopes to get back on track

Two weeks ago, Mount St. Mary's was red hot and senior guards Julian Norfleet and Rashad Whack were the main reason.

The Mount had won three of four games, with Norfleet moving to the top of the NEC scoring list - and putting himself into conference Player of the Year consideration - by averaging 26.8 points per game while Whack averaged 22.8 points per game during that span.

But the Mountaineers have dropped two of three since then, and MSM's two leading scorers have been a big part of that, too. After a four-game stretch in which he never scored fewer than 24 points, Norfleet has totaled only 23 points in his last three games, missing 16 of his past 20 three-pointers. Whack has scored only 16 points in his past two games. Neither player reached double-figures on a recent road swing through St. Francis (Pa.) and LIU Brooklyn.

The Mount (7-12, 3-3 NEC) returns home tonight at 7 to face Fairleigh Dickinson (8-12, 4-2), needing more from Norfleet and Whack but also knowing others have potential to help. Senior guard Sam Prescott scored 25 points last Thursday at St. Francis, easily his top output of the year, while freshman Byron Ashe had a career-high 18 at LIU Saturday, when sophomore center Taylor Danaher tallied a career-high 13.
