Editorial: Beware of Super scams

Tickets to New Orleans and the Super Bowl already have climbed to astronomical levels, and folks looking to make the trip and cheer on the Baltimore Ravens need to exercise care when looking for deals because there are plenty of scammers out there interested in taking your money without giving you anything in return.

Instances of people spending top dollar for trip packages to important events, only to find out later that they have no tickets to the event they were hoping to see, are sadly commonplace in society today.

AAA Mid-Atlantic in a press release this week noted, "If booking through a travel vendor directly, the auto club advises fans to do their research prior to signing on the dotted line to determine if the company is reputable. Always book the package via a credit card and never give your credit card over the phone unless you have initiated the call.

"Ensure a detailed contract of the trip is provided and carefully review all documentation before signing. Understand what is or is not included in your package so you can prepare for any additional expenses; for example, does the package include all forms of transportation that you may require - airline tickets, transfers to/from the airport and/or game?"

Package deals are running in the thousands of dollars. That provides a lot of incentive for anyone looking to make a quick buck by scamming sports fans by offering trips or ticket packages and not coming through.

The best thing that fans can do, as noted by AAA, is to do business with trusted sources and get everything in writing.

Many fans probably still recall the last time that Baltimore went to the Super Bowl and returned victorious. The fun and pageantry surrounding the big event, for many, is something that they will want to experience no matter what the cost.

But if you're going, make sure that you do your homework, work with reputable sources and plan for every contingency. In doing so, there will be less of a chance that you will be disappointed, and that the experience will be memorable for all the right reasons.
