Ravens: Dennis Pitta broke his hand

OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta broke his hand and will likely require surgery to repair the damage, according to coach John Harbaugh.

Pitta is expected to return for the season opener Sept. 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"It looks like he broke his hand," Harbaugh said. "It looks like he'll have to repair it in some form or fashion."

Pitta caught 40 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns last season, career-high totals for the former fourth-round draft pick from Brigham Young.

Pitta works in tandem with starting tight end Ed Dickson.

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw has a bruised right shoulder and didn't practice today.

Wide receiver Tandon Doss didn't practice because of a hamstring issue.

Cornerback Jimmy Smith is practicing despite a bruised shoulder.
