Letter to the Sports Editor: Olympics should not dump wrestling

Sports Editor:

What in the name of almighty Zeus is the International Olympic Committee thinking? How can they in all good conscience eliminate one of the original sports from the Olympic Games? Wrestling was a part of the games in ancient Greece and is depicted on pottery dating from thousands of years ago. Wrestling was included in the first modern games and has been in each one since 1900. For several countries, wrestlers are the only athletes who participate and their successes are cause for national celebrations.

To my mind there are events and disciplines more deserving of elimination that wrestling is. How about doing away with rhythmic gymnastics? That is mild tumbling while holding a ribbon, small ball or hula hoop. Maybe synchronized swimming? That used to be called water ballet. Although the performers are athletic, what they do is more entertainment than sport. Tennis professionals hold a Wimbledon or U.S. Open title in much higher regard than an Olympic medal. Golf, which will be contested in Rio, isn't an Olympic sport. The players would rather win a British Open or Masters championship.

If I had a list of all of the events in front of me I'm sure I could come up with quite a few that I would exclude before dropping wrestling. Person on person, purely objective events decided by time, distance, or a physical victory should be the lynchpin of Olympic competition. Sports decided by the subjective opinions of judges who may or may not be biased should be the first to be done away with.
