Westminster library branch

The Westminster branch of the Carroll County Public Library, 50 E. Main St., Westminster, will offer the following programs this week. Registration is required only where noted. For more information, call 410-386-4488.

Tuesday

Story Pals-My Garden: 10 a.m. For ages 2-3. A theme-based Story Time featuring interactive and age-appropriate stories, songs, fingerplays and activities. With an accompanying adult caregiver.

Read and Play: 11 a.m. For ages birth-24 months. A Story Time featuring lap games, tickles, bounces, and rhymes followed by a playgroup for meeting and mingling. With an accompanying adult caregiver.

Evening Story Time -My Garden: 7 p.m. For all ages. End your day in a special way. This Story Time , open to all ages, introduces stories through books, songs, and activities. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

The Battle of Baltimore and the birth of the Anthem: 7 p.m. For adults. Vince Vaise, Chief of Interpretation at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine and Hampton National Historic Site, will detail the causes of the War of 1812, why Baltimore was the subject of the British attack, and how soldiers, sailors, free African Americans, and civilians banded together to save their city. Audiences will learn how Francis Scott Key's words still resonate with us today. This program is made possible with funds from the Maryland Humanities Council. A Celebrating America program. All attendees need to register.

Friday

Babies and Bagels: 10 a.m. For ages birth-3. Join us for breakfast. Come in for an informal playgroup for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers. Enjoy bagels, orange juice, and adult conversation while the babies play. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Refreshments will be served.

Minecraft Mania: 3:30 p.m. For ages 11-17. Join us for a Minecraft-themed adventure at the library. Play the pocket version of the game, compete with friends, sample some inspired food, and craft away. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday

Everything Irish: 9 a.m. For all ages. All ages are invited to run in the 4th Annual 5K Celtic Canter (beginning and ending at O'Lordans Irish Pub), and children are invited to chase leprechauns-with Westminster Recreation & Parks-in Westminster Branch Library's Mary Lou Dewey Sculpture Park. There will be other child-oriented games and Irish-themed entertainment on the library's stage. Irish craft activities will take place inside the library. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A Celebrating America program. 9 am Celtic Canter; 9:45 a.m. Leprechaun Chase; 10 a.m. Irish Crafts.

Make Your Own Musical Instruments: 10 a.m. For all ages. Find out how you can form your own band with instruments that you make from common household material. Great musical fun For all ages. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Sunday

Celebrating Carroll County with Shriver History: 2 p.m. For all ages. James M. Shriver III, descendant, Treasurer, and past President of The Union Mills Homestead Foundation Board of Governors, will speak about the recently published book, Pastime: Life & Love on the Homefront During the Civil War, 1861-1865, edited by Helen Drury Macsherry. The book uses never-before-published materials from the Shriver family archives. James will discuss aspects of the book, some Shriver history, and the Union Mills Homestead and Grist Mill, a historic treasure of Carroll County. Enjoy a cup of tea and sample some baked goods made with ingredients produced at Union Mills. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Refreshments will be served. A Celebrating America program.

Emergency. Are YOU Prepared?: 2 p.m. For adults. The Maryland Emergency Management Agency will be presenting information on the most common hazards experienced in Maryland and how to prepare for them, as well as items to include in various types of emergency supply kits. Audience participation is welcomed. All attendees need to register.

Japanese Street Snacks 101-A Culinary Workshop: 6:30 p.m. For adults. Sushi has been enjoyed in Japan since the 8th century. Join us as Tiffany Simmons demonstrates how to make onigiri and sushi in this hands-on workshop. Materials will be provided.

Genre-flecting Book Club-Arthur & George by Julian Barnes: 7 p.m. For adults. Do you like reading classics, but also like a little variety? Then join us for this unique book discussion group. Each quarter we'll select a topic-mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.-and we'll discuss classic books from these unique genres. For the spring quarter we'll be reading historical fiction.

Saturday

Pi(e) Day Rounded Up: 1 p.m. For ages 11-17. It's Teen Tech Week at the library. 3.14 is Pi Day, but we're rounding up so you can celebrate with us and some real-and delicious-pies. What's the filling? Math, science, technology, and a whole bunch of tasty things. We won't make you eat the numbers-just the pie. Refreshments will be served.
