West Middle student wins essay contest

Mel Brennan, a seventh grade student at West Middle School, won first place in the Giant Food 6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr./Black History Month Essay Contest. This essay contest supports Dr. King's vision to join together people from all walks of life and from all races and backgrounds for the common good. This year's theme was "Making a Difference -- What Can You Do to Help Fight Hunger in Your Community?"

The contest was open to students enrolled in grades 6 through 8 in Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, and prizes were awarded to 1st and 2nd place entries in each grade. Brennan won a $750 cash prize for his winning essay.
