John H. Horst, 82, of Westminster

John Herbert Horst, 82, of Westminster, died Friday Jan. 10, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born Oct. 24, 1931, in Westminster, he was the son of the late Charles Horst and Rachel Campbell Fry. He was the husband of Jane Takovich Horst, his wife of 51 years.

He was a 1948 graduate of Westminster High School. He first worked as a machinist for Black & Decker. He retired in 1984 from the Army National Guard, as a First Sergeant of the 110th FA, Westminster. He worked for the United States Post Office as a letter carrier and retired in 1993.

He was an avid reader and an Orioles and Ravens fan. He was a member of the 29th Division Association and a life member of Carroll Post 31 American Legion.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter and son-in law Lisa and Ronald Groomes, of Westminster; daughters Jean Horst and Diane Geiman, of Westminster; sons and daughters-in-law Jonathan and Dawn Horst and Steven and Melissa Horst, of Hanover, Pa.; sister Betty Banzhoff, of Hagerstown; and grandchildren Justin, Andrew, Matthew, Alexander, Logan and Cole.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg.
