Flooding, but no tornado confirmed in Carroll

Even though a tornado warning was issued by the National Weather Service Monday night, there were no indications that a twister actually touched down in Carroll County.

The Carroll County Office of Emergency Management and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office said they did not receive calls about widespread damage following reports of a tornado in the Woodbine area. Lt. David Stem, of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, said none of the deputies working in the area nor the residents reported seeing damage.

In a prepared release sent out by Stem at 8:15 p.m., he said that, "According to our emergency communication center, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Doppler radar indicated that a tornado could soon be or was on the ground in the Woodbine area. However at this time, we have had no reports of damage that would indicate that is the case."

The National Weather Service issues tornado warnings when there is confirmation of a tornado on the ground or if radar indicates conditions are favorable for rotation in a storm, thereby indicating a tornado is possibly forming or has already formed.

The National Weather Service reported structure and tree damage near Starting Gate Court in the Howard County portion of Woodbine that may have been caused by a tornado. An investigation will be conducted to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado or straight line winds.

While a tornado did not cause any damage in Carroll, Stem said a number of low-lying roadways were flooded due to day-long bouts of rain. Flooded roadways included John Pickett Road, Twin Arch Road, Morgan Road, White Rock Road and Gillis Road, he said.

Carroll County government road crews were called in to block off flooded roadways Monday night, Stem said. By 9 p.m. Monday, drivers were being urged to use major roadways and avoid low-lying, county roads, he said.
