Carrolltowne students submit winning proposal in contest

A group of fifth grade students from Carrolltowne Elementary School worked with gifted and talented resource teacher Caterina Walsh-Manelli to submit a name proposal for an unnamed river in the Taneytown area. The contest, entitled "The Monocacy Starts Here", was sponsored by the Carroll County Planning Department and the Monocacy Scenic River Citizens' Advisory Board.

The students' name proposal was chosen by the judging committee as the winning name for Carroll County stream #1 and has been submitted to the United States Geological Survey Department (USGS) for final review and determination.

The students conducted research and proposed the name "Terra Rubra Creek." The name identifies the home that was the birthplace of Francis Scott Key. This historical farm is located in Carroll County approximately 4 miles away from the soon-to-be-named creek.

The students who worked on this project as fifth graders at Carrolltowne – Langley Bott, Monica Kuether, Morgan Sutherland, and Rachel Thiem – now attend Oklahoma Road Middle School.
