Maryland endures second-warmest year on record

Last year was the hottest on record in the United States, according to data from National Climatic Data Center released Tuesday.

The average temperature in the United States was 55.3 degrees last year, breaking the previous record from 1998 by a full degree. Last year was three degrees warmer than the average temperatures in the 20th century.

Nineteen states had their warmest years on record. In Maryland, last year was the second-warmest year on record.

It was the warmest year on record at weather stations at Reagan National Airport and Dulles Airport. It was the third-warmest year on record for Baltimore, according to a release from the National Weather Service. The only years warmer at BWI were 1931 and 1949.
