Carroll robotics teams Robo-Serpents, Team Pilots and Party Hat Piranhas will be going to the state robotics competition March 1 at University of Maryland, Baltimore County after their performance at the FIRST Lego League Qualifying Tournament Saturday at Carroll Community College.
At the competition, fourth- through eighth-graders tested their robotics know-how in a game called "Nature's Fury." The event also had a Junior FIRST Lego League Expo, which included two teams of kindergarten through third-grade students from the Westminster area, according to a news release.
More than 50 volunteers from middle and high school robotics teams and alumni, local businesses and Carroll Community College staff facilitated the event.
Seven of the 18 teams competing in the "Roar of the Robots" were from Carroll County. FIRST Lego League requires students to design a robot based on the popular Lego Mindstorm kits to accomplish specific tasks carried out on a 4-foot-by-8-foot field. The teams must research a topic and present an innovative solution to a panel of judges, according to the release.
