Monthly breakfasts open to all at Taneytown Senior and Community Center

Looking to break out of your typical Tuesday morning routine every now and then?

The Taneytown Senior and Community Center offers just such an opportunity at its monthly site council breakfasts, which are held from 8 to 10 a.m. the second Tuesday of each month. Next month's breakfast falls on July 8.

"The chipped beef gravy is wonderful," said Ruth Martin, center manager. "It's a nice breakfast for $4.50."

Martin said the July breakfast will mark a 50-cent increase in the price of the breakfasts, which are a fundraiser the site council uses to help pay for various things at the center, including materials for activities and scholarships for members who can't afford classes.

The breakfasts are prepared by site council members and typically include scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, Belgian waffles, chipped beef gravy and biscuits, fruit, coffee, hot tea, juice and milk, Martin said.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast is open to the community, she said; diners needn't be members of the center.

Martin said advance reservations are appreciated, "but we're not going to turn anyone away."

Martin said the breakfasts have been ongoing for at least 15 or more years. Though last month 35 to 37 people attended, they used to get crowds "well into the 50s," she said. "We'd like to see it pick back up."

Networking meal

The Taneytown Business Breakfast is now the Taneytown Networking Breakfast, and next month's breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. July 11 at Thunderhead Bowl & Grill.

City of Taneytown Economic Director Nancy McCormick said she changed the name of the breakfast to reflect the fact that the monthly event is not just for business owners - it's open to anybody. Anyone interested in any of the various topics or speakers or in networking with others in the area is welcome to participate, she said.

At the July breakfast, representatives from the Carroll County Health Department will be talking about substance abuse, particularly heroin opiates and various drugs available on the street, and how costly it is to employers and society, McCormick said.

The buffet-style networking event is held the second Friday of each month and costs $10, payable at the door, plus tip.

Reservations are required to accommodate seating and food and should be made no later than July 9 by contacting McCormick at nbmccormick@taneytown.org or 410-751-1100.

Free bowling is available beginning at 6:45 a.m. Those who wish to bowl need to call the bowling alley at 410-751-1750.

Thunderhead Bowl & Grill is at 4337 Old Taneytown Road, Taneytown.

Feasting on crabs

The Monocacy Valley Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6918 will host a crab feed from 1 to 4 p.m. July 12.

The cost of the all-you-can-eat meal is $30. Included are steamed crabs, chicken, beer and soda, chips and pretzels, cheese, crab soup and a variety of salads. There will also be games of chance.
