Letter: Support Roush in District 3 race

Four years ago, I had the privilege of writing a letter to support the election of Dave Roush as a Carroll County Commissioner for District 3.

At that time, it was my hope that he would not only be elected, but also be given the opportunity to use his professional background, education and expertise to resolve the challenging issues with which Carroll County faced. Four years later, I can now write that my hopes and expectations for Dave have not only been met, but that he has surpassed them.

One of the problems shared by all Carroll County homeowners is the high property tax. During the past four years, Roush has worked to lower property taxes three times, and lowered the homestead tax credit from 7 percent to 5 percent. In addition, he has helped to decrease the tax burden of residential property owners by working to attract new businesses to Carroll County.

In the past four years, 840 commercial/industrial use and occupancy permits were issued, which represent over $75 million in investments by our business community.

The portion of our tax base contributed by commercial/industrial property has risen from 10.6 percent to 12.3 percent. This increase in business development also has helped to reverse a 2010 decline in the labor force to an increase in 2012 and 2013. More jobs are a byproduct of more business development.

The future continues to look bright as Roush is currently supporting 24 active development projects which will result in an anticipated $32 million being spent in 2014 on construction and renovation of commercial/industrial space.

I am confident that Roush will continue to work on making Carroll County a better and more affordable place in which to live. As a life-long resident of Westminster and a former owner of a local business, I know that my vote for Roush will be an investment in a continuation of progress for Carroll County. Thank you for your consideration to vote for the re-election of Roush as our District 3 County Commissioner.
