Liberty High School's Salute to the Armed Forces concert is coming up at 7 p.m. May 2. Students in the Instrumental Music Department and special guest performers will present a program which will feature patriotic, jazz and "Americana" music.

"We invite professional musicians to work with our students on quality selections that our audience will enjoy," Brandi Jason, instrumental music director at the school, wrote in an email. "These musicians work with our students free of charge in order to 'pay it forward' to the next generation, and also to help us provide an excellent concert experience with a varied repertoire for our service people and audience members."

The guest artists for this year's concert are concert pianist David Kreider, who will perform "Rhapsody in Blue" with the Wind Ensemble; concert cellist Maxim Kozlov, who will perform "Fiddle Faddle" with the Full Orchestra; opera soprano Laura Zuiderveen, who will perform "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables" with the Symphonic Band; and jazz trumpeter Todd Butler, who will perform "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "My Funny Valentine" with the Jazz Ensemble.

The concert will have music that will appeal to all ages, but there will be a focus on music from the Big Band era for World War II and Korean War veterans, bringing back the sounds from their years on active duty.

"The concert concludes with an Armed Forces medley that recognizes all veterans and service people in the audience as my students present them [each] with a small American flag and special patriotic gift," wrote Jason. "This part of the concert always gives me goose bumps and the warm fuzzies!"

Admission to the concert is $12 per person, which will include a complimentary dessert and drink.

You will also be able to buy raffle tickets in the lobby for special, themed gift baskets that will be on display.

All proceeds from the concert will be used to support the students in the school's Instrumental Music Department. The funds will be used for the purchase or maintenance of instruments, equipment and music.

Liberty High School is at 5855 Bartholow Road, Eldersburg.
