HAMPSTEAD - More than 1,000 swimmers ages 6 to 18 gathered at Four Seasons Sports Complex Wednesday for the 2012 Straehle Invitational swim meet.

The meet, hosted by the Carroll Aquatics swim team, has been held in Hampstead for the last seven years. Seven county teams competed in the meet (Carroll Aquatics Blue Sharks, Freedom, South Carroll Swim Club, Westminster Riding Club, Westminster Stingrays, Nottingham and the North Carroll Swim Team) as well as teams from Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties.

"It's a good group of kids," said Mike Kremer, meet manager and Carroll Aquatics coach. "It's the finale, the high point. ... Overall, it's run well and with the help of everyone, it's good."

Kremer's team finished ninth overall, the second highest placing county team, behind third-place South Carroll.

"I think they've done well," Kremer said. "Our swimmers have had good swims during the summer already, so they'd like to have best times here. Some of them just a little bit off, some of them making best times, it's a little bit of a mix. But overall, it's been really good."

One of Kremer's swimmers who had a good day was 17-year-old Dan Moreno. Moreno won the 100-meter freestyle and 50 butterfly, finished second in the 100 individual medley, and was part of the winning team in the 200 mixed freestyle relay.

"My first one was kind of like a warm-up," Moreno said. "Usually my first event, I'm kind of not on my top. But my second one, I kind of was just looking for an opening to steal the win."

Moreno's win in the 100 freestyle was his first win ever at Straehle, after competing at the meet for the last two years.

"I was kind of surprised," Moreno said. "I was seeded to win but I wasn't expecting it. ... I prefer to drop [time] instead of winning, but it feels good to have a win."

The Tomsuden family (Matthew, 16, Timothy, 14, Allison, 10, and Christopher, 8) followed up their impressive performance at the county swim meet with another strong meet Wednesday. All four swim for the South Carroll Swim Club.

Timothy won the 13-14 100 individual medley, finished second in the 50 backstroke. Allison won the 9-10 50 freestyle and finished second in the 25 backstroke and 25 meter butterfly.

"I've been practicing, I've been doing swimming a lot lately," Allison Tomsuden said, "so I think that really helped me. ... I felt really good."

Megan Grabowski, one of South Carroll's coaches, said she was impressed with the Tomsudens' recent performances.

"Overall, great races," Grabowski said. "They're always placing top three or four in everything they're swimming so they look good."

Kremer said that he thought the swim meet was an overall success once again this year, and was appreciative of all the participants and volunteers.

"What's nice about it is, for youth athletics, to see a bunch of parents, coaches, everyone work well together, show good sportsmanship, is very nice," Kremer said. "It gives you faith in our youth sports."
