Cindy Parr: Concert series celebrates 20 years

For 20 years, Human Services Programs of Carroll County Inc., in partnership with the City of Westminster Recreation and Parks and Carroll County Recreation and Parks, has offered the Month of Sundays concert series.

Each Sunday in July, for two decades, a variety of musical stylings has permeated the summer air from the outdoor stage in Westminster City Park. Concerts begin at 6:45 p.m.

Country, bluegrass, rock, pop, jazz and oldies tunes have been the choice of many cover bands that have performed the free concerts over the years.

The Month of Sundays concert series has been a signature event for HSP. HSP is Carroll County's community action agency that serves low-income and at risk individuals through a number of programs geared at preventing homelessness. The MOS event has been a vehicle used to educate the public, collect personal care items for shelters and raise funds for agency operations.

This year, four acts will bring their special talents to Carroll County for the 20th annual Month of Sundays concert series event.

Kicking off the series July 6 will be The Van-Dells. The Van-Dells, who bill themselves as the nation's No. 1 rock 'n' roll review band, possess musical charm supported by their dramatic flair. Their unique blend of comedy, costume changes, choreography and tight harmonies has helped them entertain audiences of all ages for close to four decades.

The first set of their show presents the last graduating class of Van-Dell High School, which occurred in 1958. They combine comedy with rock 'n' roll songs of the 1950s. The second set of the show takes the audience on a trip down memory lane to the "glitter and gold" era, which made the music of the 1960s so popular.

On July 13, Owings Mills-based Midnite Run will have the park on its feet with their classic rock renditions. Music from the 1970s, 1980s, top 40 and soft rock genre is the specialty of this local favorite.

Country act Dean Crawford and the Dunn's River Band will take center stage July 20. This popular country/southern rock group has emerged as a mid-Atlantic premier group that sings traditional and contemporary country tunes.

Hard Days Night will finish the series July 27, singing their many favorite Beatles tunes. This band is one of the few touring Beatles tribute bands that through their dedication to authenticity was invited to play at the world famous Cavern Club, located in Liverpool, England, birthplace of the Beatles.

Hard Days Night performs songs from the 1962-1966 era exactly as the Beatles did. John, Paul, George and Ringo are mirrored by this group, whose performance includes exact costume replications and their musical instrument makes: Hofner, Gretsch, Rickenbacker and Ludwig.

In addition to these wonderful musical acts, pre-concert entertainment will cater to Carroll County car lovers.

Come early July 6 and check out Street Cars of Desire Car Club. This Maryland-based car club features hot rods and old cars.

On July 20, the Mid-Maryland Ford Club will display a broad range of Ford, Mercury and Lincoln cars and trucks; from antique to slightly modified, stock to street rod, original to radically modified and 1903 to present.

There is no better way to spend a Sunday evening this July than in the Westminster City Park. Bring your family and friends out to enjoy some great entertainment and show support for HSP. Hope to see you in the park.
