Stray cat tested positive for rabies in Manchester

A stray cat living around York Road in Manchester tested positive for rabies, and the Carroll County Health Department is asking any residents who could have been exposed to contact the agency.

The cat was a domestic, short-hair breed with a gray and white coat, according to the health department.

Rabies can be a fatal virus spread by saliva. The first signs of rabies are flu-like symptoms, such as weakness, discomfort, fever and a headache. There may be a prickling or itching sensation at the site of the bite. Signs can progress to cerebral dysfunction, anxiety, confusing, delirium and more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those who think they may be exposed to the cat should contact the health department at 410-876-4771.
