The tea party can whine all it wants that the budget and debt ceiling mayhem is the result of President Barack Obama's intransigence. The American people do not see it that way and, increasingly, members of the Grand Old Party itself.
Several Republican members of Congress have capitulated on tea party ideology and come to a startling conclusion. With a duly elected Democratic Senate and administration, the Republican House is simply not in the position hold the American economy hostage over a pathological determination to undo legislation that has been approved by every branch of government. The precedent these actions would set flies in the face of a functional democracy.
And isn't this what the tea party has vowed to do, thwart Obama on everything by any means possible?
It is both ironic and hypocritical that Sen. Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin grandstand at the WWII Memorial, demanding that it be opened. The tea party and its cowardly minions in the House shut it down. This is what happens when the House refuses to fund the government. It is shameful that vets cannot legally visit sacred ground, but it is equally reprehensible that Head Start and countless other programs are sliding down the cliff.
A minority of ideologues, whose support is quickly eroding, is obsessed with getting their pound of flesh.
The disingenuous appropriation of the term "super- patriot" by tea party members insults the American people. These zealots are metaphorical suicide- bombers. Luckily, the only thing they will blow up is their own party.
