The purpose of the Sylvia's Acorn fund is to assist low-income people with essential needs that cannot be addressed with the other funds administered through Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc.
Programs and services:
Making grants up to a maximum of $50 to low-income people who come to HSP with emergency needs. "It supplies anything for which there is no other resource," Haines said.
Carroll County's nonprofit community is very good at working together, she said, and when Sylvia's Acorn and other groups each make a small donation toward a larger need, it helps to accomplish that goal.
Why was the organization founded?
"It was founded by a donation from a generous local philanthropist at the community services council breakfast in October 2007, who said 'Do something good with it and make it grow,'" Haines said. "And he said, 'From a little acorn, a mighty oak grows.' So that's why we try to raise money to put back into the fund."
