College Notebook: Newman stamping her name at St. Mary's

In just two years, Shelby Newman has already made her mark on the St. Mary's College women's lacrosse program.

The Manchester Valley graduate recorded her 100th career point in the Seahawks' 19-4 victory over Southern Virginia University on Saturday, needing just 27 games to achieve the milestone.

Newman, a sophomore midfielder, tallied a season-high eight points in the victory with two goals and a career-best six assists. That gave her 101 points on 63 goals and 38 assists in her first two seasons. Her 100th point was her fifth assist of the game Saturday.

Newman has been as well-rounded as it gets. She entered Wednesday leading St. Mary's with 24 assists, 48 points, 56 shots, 32 ground balls and 22 draw controls while ranking second with nine caused turnovers. That helped the Seahawks open the year 5-5.

As a freshman, she was named Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, IWLCA first-team All-Chesapeake Region and first-team All-CAC. She led the team in goals and ground balls and finished second in points, assists, draw controls and caused turnovers.

DUTCHMEN FLYING: Three locals helped the Lebanon Valley College women's lacrosse team to a hot start, going into Wednesday's action with a 9-2 record (3-0 Commonwealth Conference).

Junior midfielder Anna Pagels (North Carroll) ranked third on the team in goals (26) and fourth in points (35) through 11 games. She scored at least once in each of the first 11 contests and started the season with an impressive streak of eight consecutive multi-goal games. She added 26 ground balls, 17 caused turnovers and 28 draw controls.

Junior attack Jenny Simensky (Winters Mill) started each of the first 11 games, contributing eight goals and 13 points while adding 10 ground balls and seven draw controls. Freshman midfielder Kara Strack (Francis Scott Key) has appeared in seven games, picking up four ground balls and coming up with two draw controls.

OWL TURNED SEAHAWK: Junior outfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster) has put together a solid season with the St. Mary's baseball team.

Roemer entered Wednesday batting .273 with a .349 on-base percentage, 11 runs, five RBIs and five steals in 20 games (19 starts). That helped the Seahawks start 14-14.

RAVEN RODGERS: Junior Leslie Rodgers (Westminster) has been one of the most productive members of the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team this season.

Rodgers is tied for the team lead with two singles wins and ranks third among Ravens with two doubles wins. Overall, she is 2-7 in singles and 2-7 in doubles for Franklin Pierce (1-8).

She has had a solid career, entering the season with an 11-8 singles record and 12-15 doubles mark over her first two years.

LOW SCORES ON LINKS: The McDaniel College men's golf team built on a strong finish to the fall season with a strong start this spring. The Green Terror won their first two tournaments of the semester, making it three straight invitationals where they recorded the low score as a team.

Led by sophomore Alex Kane's second-place finish, McDaniel took first at the Gettysburg Spring Invitational on March 22. The Terror started the spring by finishing first at the Myrtle Beach Shootout on March 18. Freshman Brian Norwitz tied for second. The Terror won the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic to cap their fall schedule. Most recently, the team tied for eighth at its Spring Invitational.

RECORD-SETTER: Junior Peter Merkel of the McDaniel men's track team started the outdoor season in record-setting style.

Merkel finished second in the 3,000-meter run at the Battleground Relays March 21-22, to set a new program mark. He crossed in 9:13.20, breaking the previous mark by nearly six seconds.
