First baseman Joe Mahoney is joining the Orioles from Class-AAA Norfolk after the club optioned Chris Tillman back to Class-AA Bowie following his win Wednesday in Seattle.

So why another first baseman, you might ask?

Well, at least it gives the Orioles a deeper bench for the remainder of the first half. Plus, Mahoney is batting .256 with 14 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBIs for the Tides.

And it looks like Tillman will be back once the Birds return home from the break.

Tillman going to Bowie rather than Norfolk likely signals his impending return, and why not. The 24-year-old tossed 8 1-3 innings (two unearned runs) and struck out seven in the Orioles' 4-2 win over the Mariners, which gave them a series win heading to Los Angeles for a four-game set with the Angels.

Pretty impressive stuff given it was Tillman's first start in the majors this season.

If you're staying up late tonight, the Orioles send Jake Arrieta (3-9, 5.81) to the mound against the Halos' Garrett Richards (2-1, 2.81).
