Letter: Past gun ban still effective

I was planning to refrain from adding to the current gun violence letters, as everyone has already made up their minds and is basically repeating the same arguments. However the recent letter claiming common sense dictates no gun control really deserves a response.

That letter claims that it is obvious and common sense that gun control laws do not work and they do not affect non-law-abiding citizens. One thing that is never mentioned is that the United States government has heavily regulated fully automatic weapons since 1934, and banned them in 1986.

This law was driven by organized crime (not exactly law-abiding citizens) using fully automatic weapons to kill each other, innocent bystanders and police officers in large numbers. The fully automatic weapon regulations virtually eliminated the problem -- and today no school children are or have been massacred with fully automatic weapons.

If Adam Lanza's mother had fully automatic weapons with their higher capacity magazines the death toll would almost certainly have been much higher.

It is not hysteria to see a problem like this that has been addressed successfully by other countries (Australia as one example) and to try and address it -- with consideration for "well regulated" as mandated in the Second Amendment.
